In the proposed study, the researchers will broadly examine the unmet family planning (FP) needs in Appalachia, in the context of the opioid epidemic, from the perspectives of women throughout the region. Results from focus groups conducted with regional providers and stakeholders will inform the design of an electronic survey administered to Appalachian women of reproductive age. Through the survey, we will assess FP in the following dimensions of service accessibility1: approachability, acceptability, availability and accommodation, affordability, and appropriateness. We will also examine respondents’ interest in contraceptives and abortion services, particularly in long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs). Additionally, women will be asked to identify potential solutions to FP problems in their communities in the context of the ongoing regional opioid crisis. Open-ended comments will also be requested to allow participants to expand on concepts. Participants will be recruited using the Facebook social media platform, via targeted advertisements and placement of the survey link on pages of interest to Appalachian people. Study results will be interpreted using a combined harm reduction approach and reproductive justice framework to guide the identification of where societal harms could be reduced by improving social justice and reproductive rights. Information obtained from survey results will represent the first time the region’s family planning needs have been broadly documented.
