On April 1st, the Society of Family Planning joined our colleagues at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, International Society for Stem Cell Research, Medical Students for Choice, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine among many others in signaling our support for the Protecting Cures Act of 2020 (H.R. 6417). Restrictions imposed in 2019 on the use of fetal tissue in biomedical research have had a stifling effect on the ability of experts to innovate, which is needed now more than ever. This new legislation would remove those restrictions and enact guardrails to protect biomedical research involving fetal tissue moving forward. We hope our government leaders will trust the science and the leaders in the scientific community, acting to remove barriers for researchers working to find a cure or treatment to end the COVID-19 pandemic.
