The Access, Delivered research team requests funding from the Society of Family Planning to address SFP’s priorities of understanding patient preference for and experience with post-abortion contraceptive care. For this project, Access, Delivered partners with Cedar River Clinics (CRC) who have been providing telehealth medication abortion since April 2020. In partnership with CRC, our dedicated team of quantitative and qualitative researchers are uniquely positioned to understand patient preferences regarding post-abortion care and how this intersects with telehealth abortion care. We will use deidentified electronic medical record data to understand differences in contraceptive method choice between telehealth and in-clinic medication abortion patients. We will also conduct interviews with 30 patients who accessed telehealth medication abortion services to gain insights into their decision-making process regarding contraceptive methods, both before selecting medication abortion and after their abortion care. This proposal incorporates a diverse Community Advisory Board representing members from under-resourced communities. We draw on an integrated theoretical framework for patient-centered access to health care to examine how study participants perceive, seek, reach, and pay for this post-abortion contraceptive care. As telehealth medication abortion accounts for over 20% of all abortions in the US, understanding patients’ perspectives on post-abortion contraceptive care in this context is essential to shaping ongoing care delivery and advocacy efforts.
