Miranda Hill is a former health educator and service coordinator specializing in reproductive health and family planning service linkage among low-income, homeless, and other high-need populations in the U.S. south. In her research, she uses data-driven and community-engaged approaches to investigate the linkages between social networks and HIV service (dis)engagement among African American women who migrate to the south. Dr. Hill recently joined faculty in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California San Francisco and is embarking on a long-anticipated pilgrimage to her family planning roots at this critical juncture of her career. Her long-term aspiration is to lead a portfolio of studies that address knowledge gaps concerning the influence of social networks on family planning among high-need populations who are not effectively reached or retained in health services. The proposed Society of Family Planning Changemaker Award will provide essential mentored training and skill development in applied content area expertise, reproductive justice, grant-writing, and community leadership to establish independence. The work stemming from this award will shed light on how dynamic intersectional factors overlap with critical life course events to shape reproductive health pathways and family planning decision-making in groups whose needs are often overlooked despite navigating high vulnerabilities and challenging contexts. Using community participatory practices, she seeks to advance transdisciplinary knowledge and impacts, leveraging the power of social connections to bridge access to resources through social network-based interventions.
