Dr. Josephine Urbina is an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, Complex Family Planning specialist and healthy equity advocate dedicated to improving the sexual and reproductive health outcomes of historically marginalized communities. Rooted in her identity as a native Spanish-speaker and daughter of Mexican immigrants, her Latinidad fuels a deep commitment to advocacy through research and education. Dr. Urbina uses qualitative methods to center the values, voices and experiences of those navigating the intersections of immigration status, language and reproductive justice – exposing the structural injustices that contribute to reproductive health disparities and working toward meaningful change. Growing up in East Los Angeles provided her with firsthand insight into how systemic lack of resources can deeply influence health outcomes and hinder one’s ability to thrive. Dr. Urbina is committed to community-engaged, equity-centered research that confronts systemic injustice and intentionally works to dismantle the harms rooted in white supremacy. Her work envisions a future where all people can have the language and cultural concordant abortion care they deserve. Her goal is to normalize abortion care in the Latinx community and increase Latine representation in Family Planning and Ob/gyn. After completing medical school at la Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico, she completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in New Jersey. She was fellowship-trained in Complex Family Planning at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Urbina is an Assistant Professor in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and currently directs the Gender Inclusive clinic at SF General Hospital.
