Science is an essential tool for ensuring access to evidence-informed and person-centered healthcare. We must build toward a future where government institutions robustly resource scientific inquiry. Public investment in abortion and contraception research has long been relatively limited, and broad-scale attacks on federal science institutions are creating broad instability around the resourcing research.
The Society advocates for federal investment in the science of and the scientists focused on abortion and contraception through:
Calls to action for expanded family planning research funding
- Report and slide deck on persistent underinvestment in National Institutes of Health (NIH) family planning research.
- Recommendations shaping approaches to address funding gaps, such as publications from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Assessment of NIH Research on Women’s Health.
- Coalition efforts with medical and research colleague organizations, including Ob-Gyn subspecialties and the Women First Research Coalition.
Supports for our community focused on federal investment in family planning research
- NIH Navigation Cohort, a proposal development program for members developing applications focused on a family planning topic in the US.
- Foundational education in grant writing module in our Society Education course for researchers-in-training.
- Resources to understand and organize around the administration’s attacks on federal research funding, updated monthly.
Advancing a collective vision of just and equitable abortion and contraception informed by science
- Request for proposals: Bridging investments in abortion and contraception research, to support the completion or partial completion of terminated NIH grants focused on abortion and/or contraception care in the US.
- Statement on advancing our vision, together, affirming how the Society aims to show up in these challenging times.
- Strategic plan and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vision.
