I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My work sits at the intersection of family planning services, racial disparities in maternal health, and implementation science. My experience conducting contraception services research in North Carolina and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to address maternal health disparities has deepened my understanding of the systemic factors shaping both contraception access and maternal health outcomes. As a result of this work, I am especially interested in how Medicaid policies influence beneficiaries’ experiences with postpartum contraception. Medicaid is the largest single payer of perinatal and postpartum care in the US. This includes enabling access to postpartum contraception services. Despite the reach and potential benefits of Medicaid, many beneficiaries continue to face barriers to obtaining postpartum contraception care that aligns with their preferences. Given Medicaid’s vital role in maternal health, and amid ongoing policy changes, I focus on evaluating how Medicaid policies shape racial differences in beneficiaries’ access to and use of postpartum contraception. Using quasi-experimental, mixed methods, and policy implementation science approaches, my research examines beneficiaries,’ clinicians’ and Medicaid administrators’ experiences with postpartum contraception care and policy implementation. My long-term goal is to lead interdisciplinary research teams that identify and advance Medicaid policy solutions to improve access to family planning services that meet the needs of all women and birthing people in the US.
