This Changemakers in Family Planning Award supports the development of Subasri Narasimhan, PhD, MPH who serves as the Research Director for the Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy (CRHLP) at the UCLA School of Law. She plans to strengthen the intersections of public health and medicine and of law and policy, by documenting, evaluating, and translating public health evidence into actionable strategies to influence law and policy. The area of work she hopes to advance is one little attended to in public policy and family planning circles– documenting the successes, challenges, and real-world outcomes of large budgetary investments in abortion care across supportive states after Dobbs. This area holds a wealth of critical information for abortion care policymakers, government health department decision-makers, advocates, and the overall family planning movement. This work will chronicle the successes of post-Dobbs public abortion investment for vulnerable populations nationwide, ultimately enhancing abortion-access states’ ability to serve people from abortion-restrictive states. Dr. Narasimhan is a native of the Southeastern U.S. with a background in reproductive justice-informed, community-based participatory, and policy-relevant research. A former SFP Emerging Scholar in Family Planning and a BIRCWH K12 scholar, she has trained at UNC-Chapel Hill, UCLA, and Emory’s RISE Center and was previously appointed as an Assistant Research Professor in global health at Emory University. The Changemakers Award will support her vision to become a mission-driven national think tank leader strategically positioned to generate evidence for actionable policy solutions and legal innovation to protect abortion access and advance reproductive justice.
