Dr. Anjanique Mariquit Rosete Lu (she/they/siya) is an assistant professor in the Boston Medical Center Ob-Gyn Department, where she specializes in complex family planning and holds a master’s degree in health policy. Dr. Rosete Lu is a physician-researcher devoted to centering historically marginalized populations’ perspectives, developing equitable yet tailored reproductive healthcare, and supporting clinician counseling skills to achieve this vision.

Born and raised in the Philippines, where abortion is criminalized and contraception is restricted, Dr. Rosete Lu’s lived experience in resource-limited communities drives her goal of advancing adolescents’ support at the beginning of their contraceptive journeys.

The Changemakers in Family Planning grant will aid Dr. Rosete Lu’s development of a prospective, longitudinal mixed-method study on adolescents’ contraceptive experiences at the time of abortion as well as method changes and outcomes in the following year. Building on her previous work, this research intentionally centers adolescents with other marginalized identities (e.g. racially minoritized, immigrants, and those who do not speak English as a primary language).

By addressing adolescent underrepresentation in abortion research, her work will complement the expertise of the BMC Complex Family Planning division as it prioritizes research that engages communities experiencing systemic oppression and develops patient-centered counseling tools. The award will allow her to refine qualitative skills to match her quantitative background, benefit from faculty mentors who led the Partners in Contraceptive Counseling & Knowledge Program and engage with a research network to guide her future leadership of evidence-based, adaptable frameworks in abortion and contraception for and by adolescents.
