Abortion surveillance in the U.S. has historically focused on facilities rather than the clinicians who provide care. In the wake of the Dobbs decision and the rapidly shifting abortion landscape, understanding who delivers abortion care is essential for training, supporting, and sustaining this critical workforce where abortion remains legal. This secondary data analysis will use electronic health record (EHR) data from three major Planned Parenthood affiliates providing care across seven states. Together, these affiliates employ hundreds of clinicians
and serve thousands of patients, including many from restrictive states. The study will describe the composition and credentials of abortion providers—stratified by clinician type and abortion method (medication vs. procedural)—and estimate the volume of care provided by each. Our specific aims are to: 1) Describe the clinician workforce providing abortions at Planned Parenthood health centers in Alaska, Hawai’i, Washington, Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico, and Nevada from July 1, 2022, to December 31, 2025; and 2) Estimate the volume of abortions provided by clinician type during this period. By leveraging standardized EHR systems and established partnerships, this study will generate timely, policy-relevant
data to inform strategies for maintaining and expanding abortion access. Understanding who provides abortion care—and how that workforce is evolving—is vital to ensuring equitable and sustainable reproductive healthcare in a post-Dobbs America.
