Joni Brown, PhD is a President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Family Science at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. She earned her MA and PhD in Health Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA in Psychology from St. John’s University. Joni’s primary research program investigates psychosocial and sociocultural influences on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in young Black women. More specifically, she has conducted research on the familial socialization experiences of young Black women and girls about Black womanhood and SRH, and how these socialization experiences relate to their SRH attitudes and behaviors. However, her research has underscored the need for more research to better understand the relationships between familial socialization experiences and family planning behaviors such as partner communication about family planning desires and contraceptive use in young Black women. Moreover, little is known about the psychological mechanisms potentially linking socialization experiences to family planning behaviors, particularly gendered-racial identity and sexual agency. Thus, the purpose of her research is to examine the relations between these sociocultural and psychological factors, partner communication about one’s family planning desires, and contraceptive use in young, partnered Black women. The findings from this research will improve our understanding of the relationships between important sociocultural and psychological factors on young Black women’s family planning behaviors. Moreover, the findings may have important implications for future research, and for Black families, as well as educators and healthcare providers, in their interactions with young Black women and girls.
