Dr. Gaby Alvarado is a physician and an associate policy researcher at the RAND Corporation who focuses on maternal health and sexual and reproductive health using a reproductive justice framework. She obtained her doctorate in policy analysis from the Pardee RAND Graduate School and her medical degree from the University of Costa Rica. She also has masters degrees in medical anthropology from Georgia State University and public health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her research includes the use of innovative qualitative and community-centered approaches to understand and address drivers of disparities in different reproductive health outcomes such as breastfeeding, maternal morbidity and mortality, maternal mental health and postpartum depression, contraceptive needs, access to health information (and misinformation), and access to abortion. Dr. Alvarado has also been a volunteer at the Lifting Latinx Voices Initiative through the Feminist Women’s Health Center of Atlanta for almost 10 years, providing training to their promotora cohorts on topics such as breast cancer screening and education, cervical cancer screening, contraception, and sexual education. Prior to joining RAND she has worked in primary health care delivery, the health nonprofit sector, and state government. She has also worked as a consultant for the Panamerican Health Organization and the International Center for Research on Women.
