Madeline Smith is a second-year medical student at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. She received her Master of Public Health with a concentration in global health, and B.A. in Biology and Modern Middle Eastern Studies, from the University of Pennsylvania. While completing her MPH, Madeline worked full-time in Penn’s Department of OB/GYN, coordinating projects within Divisions of Complex Family Planning, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Reproductive Endocrinology. An avid polyglot, she values her experience working with communities within Philadelphia’s refugee and migrant population and abroad in Morocco, including coordinating medical care, interpreting medical encounters, and designing a sexual education curriculum for youth. She serves as president of her school’s Medical Students for Choice chapter and is committed to encouraging her colleagues to view reproductive justice as a fundamental aspect of medicine. Her developing research interests include health policies and systems affecting abortion, contraception, and early pregnancy care, qualitative methods, and the history of global family planning campaigns. Madeline grew up in Western North Carolina and enjoys Latin dancing, learning new languages, and discovering restaurants in Philadelphia’s fantastic culinary scene. Madeline’s qualitative study will expand upon her recent mixed-methods survey about pregnancy of unknown location (PUL) management at Ryan residency programs. The objectives of her study are to determine how ectopic and PUL management are impacted by abortion bans post-Dobbs, understand clinician experiences interfacing with state abortion legislation and institutional policies, and compare how academic centers differ from community sites in navigating these restrictions.
