On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court issued its ruling on the Dobbs v Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization case, effectively overturning federal protections on abortion access, and giving way to state restrictions on abortion access across the country.

#WeCount reports quarterly on the changes in abortion volumes, nationally and by state, following the Dobbs ruling.

As of August 7, 2024, a new report is available on changes in abortions access during the 21 months following the Dobbs ruling. Read and share the press release and report!

Report highlights

  • The average monthly number of abortions continues to increase slightly, as compared to 2023 and 2022.
  • In January, the national monthly number of abortions reached 100,000 for the first time since #WeCount began tracking abortion volume.
  • This increase in numbers is driven by abortions provided via telehealth, which rose to 20% of all abortions in the first quarter of 2024; 80% of all abortions are provided via in-person care.
  • Since providers started offering medication abortion via telehealth under shield law protections, on average around 9,200 people per month in states with bans or severe restrictions have accessed medication abortion in this way.
